Can Insomnia Be Cured By Light Therapy?

I have problems with my sleep, I'm not an insomniac but I am a light sleeper and I find it hard to get to sleep. I personally don't like to take prescribed medication or even herbal remedies to help me get a good night's sleep... I find they make me feel 'groggy' the next day.

So, when I found out about light therapy, I was very intrigued to see what it really is, and how good it is at helping you get a good night's sleep.

OK, So What Is Light Therapy?

Light therapy is used to help with conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), hypersomnia, delayed phase sleep and depression. Plus, it also can be used to help change your biological clock... great for jet lag!

The process of it is really quiet simple... you stand or sit in front of a bright light for a period of time to promote a normal sleep-wake cycle and decrease sleep disturbances. Now, specific wavelengths of light are used for different health conditions... the most common light sources which are used in light therapy are:

  • full-spectrum light

  • ultraviolet light

  • coloured light

  • laser light

  • So, How Good Is Light Therapy At Curing Insomnia?

Well, there have been some studies in South Australia with it to find how it can help with insomnia and the findings seem encouraging.

People who suffered from early-morning awakening insomnia, found that their sleep patterns improved significantly with bright light therapy exposure. Those people also found that they felt less depressed during the day. The study also showed beneficial results in people suffering from sleep-onset insomnia.

Personally, I think this is a great way to tackle different forms of insomnia and I would recommend it to anyone suffering from insomnia. If you suffer from insomnia, why not give it a go... you may be pleasantly surprised!
